What is Teicha?

The most authentic tea ceremony(= Cha-ji. Less authentic style, but formal enough for the most of people, is Cha-kai. Cha is tea in English. ) takes 4 hours long. You look at Sumi-demae (host put charcoals on fire ceremonially ), then eat Kaiseki coarse cuisine (also drink Sake!). Guests leave the tearoom for a moment after the cuisine, during the host prepare for the second half of tea ceremony.

The second half is key element of tea ceremony. You drink Koi-cha (Koi is strong, thick, or so in English, so Koi-cha means strong and bold Mathca tea, maybe stronger than espresso…, because Koi-cha is made of a half hot water, but twice or more mathca powder. It looks green melted chocolate…rather than drink! But for koi-cha, usually use the most sweetest (expensive )powder. So you feel sweetness in bitter taste. But still, if you do not have an experience of Koi-cha ever, it will be unforgettable experience. Then you look second “Charcoal ceremony” again, and at the final, you drink Usu-cha.

I described tea ceremony briefly, to participate in (not “attend”… because guests have to play the role as much as the host in the authentic tea ceremony) the tea cremony is not easy. It is like the match of some kind of sports, you have to learn the rule, movement, purpose, and more…. I do not deny such ceremonial character of Chanoyu ( tea ceremony ), because CALMNESS have the highest value in Chanoyu. At Cha-ji, everything must flow fluently to be full of calmness in the tearoom.

As our History proved, closed and incestuous parliament will fall down quietly without anyone knowing. We have to regenerate ourselves again and again. I respect the authentic style and history, but I would like to have open-mind thinking and to make an effort to fit for modern life.

Teicha extracts “the mood” from Cha-ji, the 400-year-long-living tradition, serves Usu-cha and sweets, and decorates the tea room with seasonal flower and so on. Chanoyu care about the changing of the seasons or the change itself, so we usually change set up and sweets every two weeks (a philosophy that divides a year by 24 = every 2 weeks is based on ancient Chinese culture, it is combined with agriculture deeply. )

Our tearoom have no ceiling lights, but only the sunlight. In cloudy day, the tearoom get so dark. But such dark, dim space makes our mind calm and relaxed.

Teicha has no Temae (which means serve matcha tea in front of guests with strict etiquette), but brings tea from the kitchen.

The schedule for Teicha is the top of the page. You will reserve via E-mail, DM in Instagram or telephone. The reservation MUST be needed by a day before! Entry time is from 11am to 4pm.

¥1700yen (tax included ) for each person. (simple welcome drink, 1 sweet, 1 matcha tea, houji-cha)

If 1 or 2 persons, we charge additional ¥400 yen

no barefoot.

max 5 persons.

Teicha is the most casual chanoyu (tea ceremoby )experience, so you do NOT need any knowledge or experience of Chanoyu, but appreciate a bit of respect 🙂
